INSTANTLY KILLED

______

Thomas Lawler, a conductor on the Smethport branch of the B.B.

& K. railroad met his death in a horrible manner Saturday afternoon

at about 4 o'clock.

Lawler had come from Smethport to Ormsby with a train of

freight cars and was making a flying switch in the yards at the

latter station. he was on top of a car of coal which was cut off from

the rest of the train. The car started down the track towards

Smethport and Lawler applied the brakes. They refused to respond and

the speed of the car gradually increased.

When about two miles down the track it left the rails and

plunged down an embankment. Lawler stuck to his brake, and was

instantly killed. He was aged 35 years, and is survived by a widow

and one daughter, who live in Smethport.
