In Memoriam – Mr. and Mrs. McMurtry (Unnamed newspaper, Jan 1 or 2 1947)

Frank E. McMurtry was born on August 6, 1863 in the town of Hume, NY. He was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Williams McMurtry.   Mr. McMurtry spent his early life in Hume and vicinity.  In March 1903, he was married to Mary Rice of Fillmore.  Miss Rice was born on September 27, 1866, daughter of Harvey W. and Lydia Butler Rice.  Mrs. McMurtry was a faithful member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Fillmore, NY and Mr. McMurtry, although not a member, was as loyal to the church as he could have been.

This couple lived a quiet and happy life together in this village.  In late years both were in failing health and were confined to their home.  On December 30, 1946, Mr. McMurtry passed on and his wife followed him the next day, Dec 31.  They are survived by a son Walter Rice McMurtry, of Wellsville, NY and four grandchildren, Carl H.,  Elizabeth Ann, Walter R. and Everett L. McMurtry. They are also survived by Henry Place who, for several years, shared their love and home.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. H. Wright, assisted by Rev. Daniel Heinz from the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Fillmore.  Interment was made in the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Double Funeral Held Here for Respected Fillmore Man and Wife
Double funeral services were held from the Fillmore Wesleyan Methodist Church, Thursday afternoon Jan 2 at two o’clock for Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. McMurtry of this village who died at their home within one day of each other. The death of Frank E. McMurtry, 83, who was born and had spent all of his life in this vicinity, occurred Monday morning (December 30, 1946) after a long illness over a long period.  Besides being a farmer, Mr. McMurtry worked for several years as a cheese maker.

His wife, Mary Rice McMurtry, 80 passed away the following Tuesday evening (December 31, 1946).  She too, after her birth on Dutch Hill, had lived in that vicinity all her life, until the worthy couple retired from farming about 25 years ago and moved to this village.

Both Mr. and Mrs. McMurtry had long been active members of the local Wesleyan Methodist Church; Mrs. McMurtry took an active part in the work of the WCTU for many years.  A more modest Christian like couple it would be difficult to find.

They are survived by an only son Walter McMurtry of Wellsville and four grandchildren. Henry Place, who lived with them at the time of their deaths, had made his home with them for about 30 years.

Burial was made in the Pine Grove cemetery, Fillmore.

The officiating clergymen were Rev F. H. Wright of Houghton and Rev. Daniel Heinz, Fillmore.
