Miss Rita Sherwood, 88, of 149 Wellsville St. died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2006) at St. Joseph's Manor Olean following lengthy illness. Born September 6, 1917 in Wellsville she was the daughter of Walter and Catherine Murphy Sherwood. She attended Immaculate Conception School in Wellsville and was a graduate of the Bolivar Central School class of 1934. She was a graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of nursing in 1941 as a Registered Nurse. Miss Sherwood was employed by the former Olin Tile Co. as a registered nurse, and later held the same positon at AVX Co. in Olean. She was the office nurse for Dr. Frederick Kehr, M.D. in Olean. For several years she did private duty nursing at the former St. Francis Hosital Olean and the Olean General Hospital. She also did private in home nursing for several years prior to her retirement. She was a member of St. Mary's Church Bolivar and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church and a member of the New York State Nurses Association. Surviving are one sister, Margaret Sherwood Fitzpatrick Olean. She was an aunt to 14 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Mary S. Hogan, three brothers Richard J. Sherwood, Hon F. Sherwood and Walter Sherwood Jr. Friends may call at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc. Bolivar on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. funeral services will be held on Wednesday beginning with a prayer service from the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. followed by a mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church at 11 a.m. Rev. Louis McCormick O.F.M. as celebrant. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville. Memorials to Bolivar Fire Dept., Ambulance Fund, Immaculate Conception School Mapele Ave. Wellsville, NY 14895 or to the Mt. Irenaeus Franciscan Retreat - St. Bonaventure, NY 14778 would be appreciated by the family.
