(This display is “On Loan” materials only.)
PRESENTED BY ALLEGANY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
All the items in this exhibit were possessions of either James Stout (b. 1855) and his wife, Eva Beach Stout (b. 1858), Harold Stout (b. 1894) and his wife, Gertrude Zeches Stout (b. 1894), or Allen Stout (b. 1921) and his wife Hilda Church Stout (b. 1923) unless labeled differently. Each item has a label telling about it. All items are on loan. All three Stout families lived successively in the house built in 1898 by/for James and Eva Stout. There is one object from the Church side of the family because Hilda’s maiden name was Church, one from the Sherwood family because Hilda’s mother’s maiden name was Sherwood and one from the Adams family, Hilda’s Great Aunt. The exhibit will show photographs of all the folks listed above.
The following items will be on display: summer winter woven coverlet, plain white handspun wool blanket, four quilts and one quilt top pieced by “Aunt Maggie” Adams, two spinning wheels, a clock reel, a sewing machine head, a woven rag rug, 1908 wedding vest, and 1894 christening dress. Some other items will be displayed as props: baskets, cards with washed wool fleece, handspun wool yarn and linen thread, a chair, and a doll bed with quilt and teddy bear.
