Local History Awareness Week

"Civil War in Allegany County"

Allegany County history lovers and local leaders aim to acquaint more people with just how much rich history our county has by hosting our second annual LOCAL HISTORY AWARENESS WEEK. This year's theme is Allegany County's involvement in the Civil War covering slavery, the Underground Railroad and the county's role in the war, 1861-1865.

The activities start with a Welcome, Ribbon-cutting Ceremony in the exhibition room of the David A. Howe Memorial Library in Wellsville. Evening presentations in the Nancy Howe Auditorium of the Library will start on Tuesday night, September 26th at 7:30 PM and conclude on Friday night. Presentations are:

Tuesday the 26th: Kick-Off reception @ 7:00 PM
in exhibition room.
7:30 PM - The Basics of The Civil War by Craig Braack, County Historian

Wednesday the 27th: 7:30 PM Tom Vossler, Col. (U.S. Army Ret.) The Battle Of Gettysburg (Tom is a licensed battlefield tour guide at Gettysburg)

Thursday the 28th: 7:30 PM - Dr. Chris Makowski, The Battle of Chancellorsville (Chris is an author of several Civil War books)

Friday the 29th: 7:30 PM Spencer Annabel, MD. Dr. Annabel will re-enact the role of his Great, great grandfather - a Civil War battlefield surgeon - and talk about Civil War medicine.

EXHIBITS OPEN FOR SCHOOL TOURS & THE PUBLIC:
9:00 AM - 7:00 PM WED. - THURS. FRIDAY 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM AND SAT. 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Our events will conclude on Sunday, October 1 at the Cuba, NY Palmer Opera House with many first-person presentations of local and national Civil War personalities.

The focus of our activities will be exhibits of Civil War memorabilia and artifacts on display in the Library. Local historians and docents will be present to answer questions.

CUBA PALMER OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS: VOICES FROM OUR HISTORY

Sunday, October 1st at 2 pm

Please join us at the historic Palmer Opera House for a spectacular culminating event for Allegany County History Awareness Week. VOICES FROM OUR HISTORY will showcase many of the important notable personalities who made Allegany County great. Various significant people from towns and villages throughout the county will be portrayed by talented local actors. In addition, there will be minstrels who will entertain with musical selections. Come and "meet" history! Admission is free, but donations gratefully accepted.
