Commencement.

The class of 1909 of the Canaseraga high school held their commencement at Kingston opera house, Tuesday evening, and there was a large assemblage of relatives and friends of the members of the class. The stage was draped in white, festooned back with red; from the center of the stage was suspended the class motto: Non confectum sed initium, below which hung 1909, which was made of red roses, cut flowers were used in profusion. The stage was occupied by the Board of Education, the faculty and the class of 1909, also the Rev. A.S. Dealey. The evening’s entertainment opened with a selection by the orchestra composed of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mehlenbacher, Messrs. Jake Tuchler and Walter Bacon, after which Rev. A.S. Dealey offered an appropriate prayer. The salutatory was delivered by Gladys K. Craig, the I. Pearl Burt read an essay this was followed by a cornet solo by Walter Bacon. The class prophecy was read by Anna E. Garwood. Miss Wheeler favored the audience with a violin solo, then Myrtle I. Luce read an essay. The class poem written by Robert Scott was delivered in a pleasing manner by Stanley Whitney, next came a trio by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mehlenbacher and Mr. Givens. The valedictory was given by Ethel M. Bluestone. At this point Principal E.D. Walters made a few well chosen remarks to the class giving them some timely advice for the future and in behalf of the Board of Education presented each one with their diploma. The exercises closed with a selection by the orchestra. The young ladies looked exceedingly attractive in their sheer gowns of white most of them carrying large bouquets of red and white roses. Each member took his and her part exceptionably[sic] well and won no end of compliments. They were the recipients of many handsome and costly presents.
