Henry M. Teller - U.S.Senator - Born in Town of Granger - Educated in Allegany County

From The Nunda News, Saturday, December 2, 1876

Researched & Transcribed by Karen Meisenheimer

The Rocky Mountain News, in speaking of Henry M. Teller, one of the Colorado senators elect, says he was born in Allegany county, in this State, May 23d, 1830.  He was educated in Rushford academy and Allegany university; taught school seven years; studied law in the office of Hon. Martin Grover, and was admitted to the bar in 1858.  He then went to Morrison, Whiteside county, Ill., where he formed a law partnership with H. A. Johnson.  In 1861 he went to Central. Col., where he has since resided.  He was a Democrat in his youth, and cast his first Presidential vote for Pierce, in 1852.  He left that organization in 1853, and was among the most active organizers of the opposition to the repeal of the Missouri compromise which organization afterwards became known to the world as the Republican party.  He stumped his county for Fremont, making his first political speech at Angelica in favor of that gentleman, in 1856.  He did effective work stumping his county in Illinois for Lincoln, in 1860, and has always taken an active part in every campaign since, and has been one of the most powerful workers in the Republican party, having done as much as any other gentleman in the northern portion of the state to maintain his integrity.  His speeches in the canvas just closed were among the most powerful and convincing efforts ever made on the stump in Colorado.  Gen. Teller is one of the leading members of the Colorado bar, and yet, without neglecting his practice, he has become an extensive property owner.  His brother, Willard, is partner in most of his real-estate operations.
