Col. Bond, Howell House Porter, Wellsville, N.Y. (1877)

(Allegany County Democrat, Feb. 16, 1877. From the files of the Allegany County Historian.)

Getting off of train 3 at Wellsville, we run across our genial African, Col. Bond of the Howell House, shouting “Right this way for the Howell House, gentlemen; take the right hand ‘bus. Going directly to the center of  the city.” We cannot give the exact lingo. He names all the stages on the lines, and has a vocabulary of words unknown to any other porter on the route. We have always found him the most pleasant, gentlemanly and accommodating porter on the road, and as long as Mr. Howell keeps as good a house and as accommodating employees, we shall make a business of stopping with him.
TWO TRAVELERS.
