Firemen save landmark store

Quick action by the Willing Volunteer Fire Department saved an historical landmark this morning, the Yorks Corners General Store.

Firemen were alerted at 8:30 and upon arrival found flames coming from the chimney “like a blowtorch” 10 to 20 feet high.

Firemen fought the blaze from outside and inside the building using ladders, booster lines and chemicals. The fire was confined to the chimney of the structure but partitions around the chimney were ignited.

The store itself sustained smoke and water damage.

Built in 1833, the building was the site of the first Willing township meeting and early was used as a stagecoach stop.

Willing had 30 men, two pumpers and a tanker at the scene. Wellsville stood by at the Willing Fire Hall and also sent a tanker to the scene of the blaze.

There were no injuries and no damage to the store’s merchandise.
