DURWOOD F. COATS of Alma, forester
Alma--Durwood F. Coats, 61, of the Alma-Pikeville Road, Alma, died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 1995) at home after suffering an apparent heart attack.
He was born Oct. 11, 1933, in Wellsville, a son of Wade I. and Vera Gorton Coats. His wife, Helen Coats, survives.
Mr. Coats was a 1951 graduate of Allentown High School and a graduate of the University of Idaho School of Forestry.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Mr. Coats retired in 1986 from the United States Forest Service after 31 years as a forester.
He was a member of the New York Forest Owners Association, the Society of American Foresters, the Alma Volunteer Fire Department, and the Olean Toastmasters.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, LaDessa Coats of Fremont, Calif., and Helmi Coats of Park Rapids, Minn, two sons Frank H. "Bob" (Carla) Coats of Thorofare, N.J., and Aarne (Cindy) Coats of Lone Pine, Calif.; three grandchildren; three brothers, Kendall W. (Helga) Coats of Veigne, France, Quentin I. (Patricia) Coats of Portville, and Max W. (Mae) Coats of Piney Flats, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Duane L. Coats, and a sister, Jerry A. Bonham.
Friends will be received at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA, today (Sunday, Sept. 17, 1995) from 1 to 3 p.m., at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. Karen L. Sonnleitner, pastor of the Alma United Methodist Church, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alma Volunteer Fire Department or the American Diabetes Association.
