Obituary for Alice Garthwait

 

ALICE GARTHWAIT
OLEAN -- Alice Garthwait, 94, formerly of South Fifth Street, died Sunday (April 13, 2003) in Cuba Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing facility following a lengthy illness.
Born January 15, 1909, in Rushford, she was a daughter of Edward and Mary Ann Whalen Mountain. On September 15, 1929, she married Fred S. Garthwait, who predeceased her in 1957.
She was a resident of Wellsville for many years. She resided in Olean for about the past 30 years.
Mrs. Garthwait was a chief operator at New York Telephone Co. in Wellsville for many years, and in Olean for a few years, until her retirement.
She was a member of the telephone Pioneers of America and a member of St. Mary of the Angels church.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty (Tom) Kennedy of Kent, WA., three grandchildren, Thomas J. Kennedy of Sumner, WA., Anne Marie (John) Corbett of Maple Valley, WA., and Katherine Ann (Kirk) McCann of Lakewood, WA., three great grandchildren, Katie Corbett, Megan Corbett and Mary Corbett, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Scott and Margaret Mountain and three brothers, Thomas Mountain, Edward Mountain and Joseph Mountain.
Friends will be received Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 East State Street, Olean at which time the rosary will be recited. Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian burial Monday (April 21, ) at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Belfast.
