Obituary - Alexander L. Litchard

Prominent Rushford Man Ended Life’s Journey on Earth Jan. 16, 1922.

Alexander L. Litchard died Monday, January 16th, 1922, after and extended and severe illness.

Mr. Litchard was born in Sparta, Livingston County, November 12, 1941, the twin brother of Almanzo W. Litchard. When four years of age their parents moved to Almond where they lived until the outbreak of the Civil War when the two brothers enlisted together at Hornellsville, August 29, 1861, as private for three years in Co. D 86th N.Y. Infantry. He was discharged November 12, 1862, for disability.

At the close of the war the two brothers came to Rushford to make their future home and purchased farms here. Mr. Litchard married Myra Woods, daughter of Leverett Woods, who died several years ago.

He was a loyal citizen and willing helper, for the benefit and betterment of his community.

He was a public speaker of no mean ability and became well known throughout the county. He was Supervisor of Rushford for thirteen years, a member of Joseph Enos Lodge, F. & A. M., since 1869. For over fifty years he has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church here, having held many responsible position on the church boards. He was a leader in the county in raising thoroughbred Ayrshire cows and was a member of the county organization. He was also interested in the County Co-Operative Fire Insurance Co. and was the head of the G. A. R. County organization for several years.

The funeral was held from the home of his niece, Mrs. D. W. Gilbert, Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. Rollin E. Wilson, of Rushford, and Rev. Leland Brignall, of Caneadea, officiating. Internment took place in the Podonque cemetery.

Mr. Litchard is survived by one son, Fred Litchard, of Wellsville, two grandchildren, Alexander and Miss Irene Litchard, one sister, Mrs. Frank Dunning, of Hornell, and three brothers, John B., of Wilson; Lem H., and R. G. Of Hornell.
