Hazel D. Nichols

Cuba—Hazel D. Nichols of 12 Grove St. died Monday (Aug. 31, 1998) in Cuba Memorial Hospital Residential Health Care Facility.

Born Jan. 4, 1918, in Hornell, she was a daughter of John and Lula Taft Whiting.  She married Leon J. Nichols, who survives.

Mrs. Nichols was the co-owner of Bartlett Hardware of Cuba with her husband.  They ran the business from Jan. 1, 1952, until it was sold in 1973, when they retired.

She had been a resident of Cuba for the past 52 years.  She and her husband were active in the Friendship Swinger Square Dance Group where Mrs. Nichols had served as secretary.  She also served as membership secretary at Cuba United Methodist Church for many years.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of the Cuba United Methodist Church, the Cuba Historical Society, and the McKee Chapter 212 Order of the Eastern Star.  She had been active and served as secretary of Diet Workshop.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Steve (Mary) Nichols of Liverpool, two daughters, Jacquie (Jack) Preston of C_____, CA, and Joy (John) Riley of Cuba; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two foster daughters, Norva (The Rev. George) McCracken of Central Square, and Lisa (Joe) Reynolds of North East, PA; a sister, Helen (Wesley) Hodge of Silver Springs, FL; and three nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Jeffrey M. Riley.

Friends were received at the McIntosh Funeral Home (Nicholson Chapel), 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, Wednesday, (Sept. 2 1998) from 7 to 9pm and Thursday (Sept. 3, 1998) from 2 to 3 p.m. at which time funeral services were held.  The Rev. Ronald L Reichman, pastor of Cuba United Methodist Church, officiated with the Rev. George McCracken, pastor of the Caughdenoy United Methodist Church of Central Square, giving the eulogy.  Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery in Friendship.
