Ex-Willing Supervisor Dies At 78

Wellsville - Ernest M. Monroe Sr., 78, of Stannard - Town of Willing supervisor six years through 1967 and a retired U.S. Army colonel - died Monday (Jan. 12, 1976) in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville.

Born Nov. 14, 1897, in Mills, Pa., he was a son of Edward and Iva Monroe. His first wife, the former Jarriet Kellogg, died in 1971. On feb. 17, 1973, he married Beth Green, who survives.

He was a professional soldier in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are a son, Col. Ernest Monroe Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii; two step-sons, David Green of Albany and Richard Green of Wellsville; two grandsons, five step-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Carl Monroe of Wellsville.

Col. Monroe was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wellsville; the Wellsville Rotary club; Wellsville Lodge 239, F&AM; Corning Consistory; Ismalia Shrine of Buffalo; and a member of the Willing Fire Dept. He was also a former supervisor for the Town of Willing for six years.

Friends are being received at the Mason T. Dye Funeral Home, Wellsville, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held there Wednesday (Jan. 14, 1976) at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Randall Niehoff, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Stannards Cemetery.

The family request memorials be made to the Wellsville Ambulance Corps; the First Congregational church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
