ALFRED-- George A. Place 85, of 53 South Main St., Alfred died Wednesday at Bethesda Community Hospital, North Hornell where he had been a patient for the past month.

A native of Alfred, he was the son of Frederick and Martha Burdick Place, erly settlers in the Alfred area. A graduate of Alfred University's class of  1910, he earned his masters degree in education at the University of Buffalo.  His first teaching position was in Corning.  He later became acting superintendent and principal of the Salamanca school systems. He served in World War 1 and was named superintendent in Salamanca upon his return. He retained this position until 1941 when he moved to Albany to take a position with the state education department. Her returned to Alfred when he retired in 1957.

Vice-President of the Alfred Savings and Loan until he recently became ill, he was a mamaber of the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church, the Alfred Historical Society and a 50-year member of the University Lodge No. 944 F. and AM.

Surviving and his wife, Mrs. Ethelyn Slade Place; two daughters, Mrs Jeanne Greene of Salamanca and Mrs. Audrey Betka of Schenectady; three grandchildren; three sisters Mrs. Jerome Davis of Scottsville, Mrs Townsend Laire of Concord, Mass. and Mrs. Ethan Bars of Kent, Ohio.

Funeral services were conducted at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Alfred at  2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Russell Johnson, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in Alfred rural Cemetery.
