MORTUARY

Samuel E. Talcott

Some weeks ago when news came to this place that Samuel Talcott was seriously ill, the hearts of the entire community were moved in common sympathy, and the breath of prayer and supplication that he might be able to overcome the disease and live, stirred every heart.

News of his condition from day to day was eagerly sought, and when the wires announced his death, there was the hush of a great sorrow and all felt the blow of a personal affliction.  Not only in Rushford where he had spent the greater part of his life, was this sorrow manifested, but at his late home in Rock City, his life and character had won him hosts of steadfast friends, who manifested their devotion by every act of kindness human hearts and hands could render.

Mr. Talcott was born in Rushford in 1846 and lived here until 1878, farming being his principal occupation.  From here he went to Olean where he lived two years and then went into business at Rock City where he was at the time of his death.

The Olean Times of Friday speaks of his death as follows:

“Many of our readers will learn with regret of the death of Samuel E. Talcott, which occurred at Rock City at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the cause of his death being pleurisa.  Mr. Talcott was about forty years of age and unmarried.  He had for a number of years been successfully engaged in the mercantile business at Rock City where a host of warm and earnest friends will mourn his death.  Mr. Talcott was well and favorably known in this City having been a resident here about two years, during which time he was associated in business relations with F. W. Higgins & Co.  He was prominent in Masonic circles and was a member of St. John’s Commandery, Knights Templar.  The deceased was a native of Rushford, Allegany County, to which place his remains will be taken for interment.  The funeral will be held at that place on Saturday.  He leaves two sisters—Mrs. Brooks of Rushford and Mrs. McKee of Arcade, N. Y.

Mr. Talcott was a gentleman of high character and standing, honorable and successful in business, generous, large-hearted and companionable and his death, while in the prime of a useful life, will be deeply regretted by all who came within the circle of his acquaintance.”
