Leon J. Nichols

    Cuba—Leon J. Nichols of 12 Grove St., Cuba, died Thursday evening (Dec. 16, 2005) in Cuba Memorial Hospital’s Residential Health Care Facility.

    Born Nov. 3, 1913, in Cuba, he was a son of Roy D. and Florence Cochrane Nichols.  On Nov. 12, 1937, he married the former Hazel D. Whiting.

    They were married for 61 years.  Mrs. Nichols died on Aug. 31, 1998.

    Mr. Nichols had been employed at Randolph Children’s Home in Randolph, at the Curtis-Wright Co. in Buffalo during World War II and then as a draftsman for Worthington Corp. in Wellsville.

    He also worked at Bartlett Hardware in Cuba and purchased the business on Jan. 1, 1952. 

    He operated the business until it was sold in 1973.

    He then worked for Bradner’s Department Store in Olean in the furniture department and repaired Clocks.

    He had been a resident of Cuba for many years and with his wife was active in the Friendship Swingers Square Dance Group.  Mr. Nichols was a member of the Cuba United Methodist Church where he had served as a trustee and was a past member of the former Cuba Lodge 306 F&AM.

    Surviving are three children, Jacquie (Jack) Preston of Corona, CA; Joy (John) Riley of Cuba, and Steven (Mary) Nichols of Liverpool; two foster daughters, Norva (the Rev. George) McCracken of Fort Myers, FL; and Lisa (Joe) Reynolds of North East, PA; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

    Friends were received at the McIntosh Funeral Home, 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004 where funeral services were held on Monday (Dec. 20, 2004).

    The Rev. Stan Scoville, pastor of Cuba United Methodist Church, officiated.

    Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.
