Richard W. Swarthout, 92, of 160 Seneca St. and a former longtime resident of Allentown, died Tuesday (April 20, 2010) in Jones Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was born July 31, 1917, in Scio, the son of George and Evelena Townsend Swarthout.
On Sept. 7, 1940, in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville, he was married to Fern Allen, who survives him after 69 years of marriage.
He was a graduate of Allentown Union High School. He was a member of the Allentown United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Allentown Odd Fellows Lodge. He was an honorary member of the Allentown Volunteer Fire Department.
He worked in the oilfields for over 40 years and, until his retirement in June 1984, was on the custodial staff of Wellsville Central School.
He enjoyed time spent hunting and bowling.
Surviving besides his wife are sons, Ronald W. (Bonnie) Swarthout of Endwell, and Gary L. (Ginny) Swarthout of Spencerport; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville. Funeral and committal services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in the Allentown United Methodist Church with Rev. Diane Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Bolivar.
