Note:  In the Miel families, as of the printing of this cemetery burial list (currently September 15, 2025), I have been informed that there are seven (7) members of the family that have been named “Charles Homer Miel”.  This information came to me from Charles Homer Miel (5th).  The “original” Charles Homer Miel (1st), listed above as having been born in 1734 in Britain, came to Canada where he served in the war with France.  Later he moved to the United States and served in the Revolutionary War on the side of America.

DOSHA ANN BISSELL (SLADE)

Dosha Bennett Slade portrait behind curved glass in frame, is proudly displayed in the museum of Allegany County Historical Society.  A family descendent presented the portrait to the museum several years ago.

Dosha Ann Bissell (Slade)

Born: August 28, 1827

Died: July 02, 1916

Married: George H. Slade

Children: Edgar Slade; Florence Slade (Sylor); Charles Slade

Lived in Town of Allen; Buried in Fink Hollow Cemetery.

Large (16” x 21”) Portrait of Dosha at Allegany County Historical Society was gifted by her Great-Great Grandson.

Her gr-gr-grandson also provided the Biographical History of Dosha:

“Dosha Ann recalled her early childhood at her father’s trading post near Birdsall, NY.

Whenever her father was required to leave home for several days, he would lock and shutter his buildings to protect his family.  Indians wanting tobacco, etc., would knock on the shutters and doors but were not permitted entry until her father returned home.”

According to the Census data, Dosha Ann lived with her parents, Abner & Chloe Bissell, in the Inn her father ran in Allen, NY.  She married George H. Slade in 1853 and the couple had 3 children.  Dosha and George owned a farm on Allen Road in Allen, NY.  Dosha was widowed in 1872 and managed the farm on her own until her death with some help from her children.

Dosha was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
