Dr. M. Ellis Drake79, of Skaneateles died February 28 at his home after a long illness. He was the ninth president of Alfred University.
Dr. Drake was born in Oswayo (Potter County Pa.) He graduated from Alfred University in 1925. After earning a master's degree from Syracuse University he returned to Alfred as a history and political science instructor. In 1930 he studied at American University whre he earned a PhD in history and political science in 1932.
Upon returning to Alfred, he was an instructor in history and political science, dean of men and dean of liberal arts. In 1948 he was appointed president of the university.
Dr. Drake received honorary degrees from Hartwick College, American University and Alfred, including Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Humane Letters. For two consecutive years, Dr. Drake served on the state Committee to Select Rhodes Scholars.
After retiring form Alfred he moved to Skaneateles.  He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and it's vestry. She served on the Skaneateles Library Board. In October of last year, Dr. Drake was again honored by Alfred when a new portion of Herrick Memorial Library was dedicated in his name.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Marie (note 1) Drake and two daughters Mrs. Meredith D. Hurst of Simsbury, Conn. and Mrs. Jeanne D. Allen; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were at the convenience of the family.  A memorial service will be held at Alfred at a date to be announced. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Skaneateles.
Contributions may be made to the Organ Fund of St. James Church or to Skaneateles Volunteer Emergency Service.
