Death of William Crandall, of Alfred
(from the Allegany County Democrat, Jan. 4, 1878. Contributed by Craig Braack.)
Another one of the old pioneer settlers of this county has gone to his rest. Mr. Wm. Crandall, of Alfred, died December 26th, 1877, aged 78 years. He was born in Renssalaer county, N.Y., in 1799. During the war of 1812, when but 13 years of age, he enrolled himself in the army of American patriots, and being too young to shoulder a musket, served as a waiter boy. He moved to Alfred in 1818, where he resided until death summoned him to a fairer and better land. Mr. C. was a man respected by all. He has served the town as Supervisor several terms. The whole community mourn his loss.
