WELLSVILLE - Florence A. Sweet, 95, and formerly of 22 Johnson Street, passed away in the Highland Park Nursing Center on Saturday (Aug. 24, 2013) following a long illness.
She was born in the Town of Willing, N.Y., on Dec. 6, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Jessie Witter Phillips.
On Feb. 14, 1942, in Wellsville, N.Y., she was married to Milton H. Sweet, who predeceased her on July 13, 2006.
She was a graduate of the Wellsville High School and Alfred University.
Before starting her family, she was a reporter for the Hornell Evening Tribune paper. For many years, she was active in the OES, Evergreen Twig of Jones Memorial Hospital, the AAUW, DAR, and was a Lifetime member of the Monday Club.
She was very active in many of the local civic organizations and was always willing to arrange their publicity for the local newspapers. In 1974, the Patriot honored her as the "Woman of the Year."
She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Wellsville.
Surviving are a daughter, Diane (Daniel) Hall of Canandaigua, N.Y.; sons, David J. (Bonita) Sweet of Penfield, N.Y., Stephen Sweet of Wellsville, and Philip (Kathy) Sweet of Wellsville; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, all of which she leaves with wonderful memories of their specialness to her; also several nieces and nephews.
She was also predeceased by her parents, husband and sisters Myrtle Erwin and Betty Crittenden.
Friends may call at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville today (Aug. 27, 2013) from 2 to 4 p.m., at which time services will be held with Rev. Stanley Scoville officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville at the family's convenience.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Wellsville or a charity of the donor's choice.
