Woelfel JulianDr. Julian Bradford Woelfel, age 91, died suddenly on Saturday, September 2, 2017. He is survived by his wife, of 69 years; and his three sons, Bradford (Margo), Barry aka Jack Wolf, and Jay (Kristy). Bradford and Jay both graduated from Ohio State and Barry attended there and finished up in California with degrees from Sonama U. and Berkeley. Julian was a Professor Emeritus in The Ohio State University College of Dentistry Department of Prosthodontics and retired after 40 years. Julian came to Columbus from New York City when he was 12 when his father accepted a faculty position in the College of Education at OSU. He attended University School on the campus, graduated in 1943 and enrolled in OSU in pre-dent Navy V12 program in an accelerated program, because of WW 2, graduating in March 1948. The war had ended so no more military service was needed. He joined the OSU dental faculty immediately with the rank of dental intern in the denture department, his special interest. He married Marcile in May and they were happily together for 69.years. He taught and did research, attended many of professional societies meetings and lectured in 18 foreign countries, including Wales, Ireland, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. In 1967, he was a Visiting Professor in Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan for 4 months. After he retired in 1989, he was a Visiting Professor for 3 months in Taiwan, Brazil and 6 months in London, England. The 9th edition of his textbook, Dental Anatomy, was recently published and is widely used in US dental schools and abroad. He holds patents on two inventions, which he gave to the University. He was granted a leave of absence from OSU College of Dentistry when he was invited by the American Dental Association to be a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. for two years. He made dentures using many different materials to be certified in the use in the USA. He is veteran of the Korean War, appointed as a Captain in the U.S. Army 1st Armored Division in Ft. Hood, Texas and was put in charge of the Army Dental Laboratory there for 2 years. After he retired in 1989, he and Marcile toured extensively, visiting China, South America, Costa Rica, many S. Pacific Islands, Europe, Africa, Madagascar and their 2 most exciting visits were to Easter Island and Papua New Guinea.
