Words that have been previously said........

"To one whose neighborhood has been the scene of important events, the history of those events is the most interesting of all history.........
.......Under the sway of cause and effect, historic events cannot stand alone.  They form an unbroken chain......
The history of so limited territory as a county in New York has its roots not only in remote times, but in distant lands, and cannot be justly written without going far beyond the county limits for some of its essential facts....." ....from 1806-1879 Beers, History of Allegany County NY

This website will not go far before the initial arriving settlers to the county in the very late 1790s....nor will we try to relate material from outside the boundaries of our County.

The section of "County History" will provide general articles relating to the history of the county with a scattering of subjects and personalities that we hope you find interesting.

Allegany County Historical Society is the central location for publishing these items.  Feel free to contribute to this section of the website by contacting the WEBMASTER.

Also, each Town of the County is provided a storage space for their specific stories to tell.....

Choose any town in the Right column "Menu" to navigate to that Town's information.

Genealogy Lineage Research Service

Saturdays, 1-3 pm

At the new “PATRIOTS CORNER”

In The Allegany County Historical Society Museum

11 East Greenwood Street – Andover NY

Genealogy lineage research services are offered by the Catherine Schuyler Chapter of the NSDAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution or DAR) at the newly established “Patriots Corner” in the  Allegany County Historical Center and Museum from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. each SATURDAY!

All interested in receiving assistance in documenting their family’s genealogy should arrive between 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and will be seen on a first come, first served basis.

Also, lineage research services, as time permits, may be accessed by leaving a message at the Patriots Corner describing the genealogical questions for which assistance is needed and including contact information for a response.

A particular focus of these services will be on verifying ancestry for the purpose of tracing lineage to those who lived during the Revolutionary War era and are or may have been individuals who contributed to the founding of our country through civil, patriotic, or military services.

Over time, the Patriots Corner will contain expanded on-site resources designed specifically to honor American Revolutionary War patriots with family ties to Allegany County, as we look forward to our nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
