LIST OF WAR OF 1812 VETERANS
ASSOCIATED WITH ALLEGANY COUNTY
The following list was put together by William A. Greene from Andover. This was accomplished with information from the “Index of Awards on Claims of The Soldiers of the War of 1812, 1860 & 1880”
I want to THANK the following American Legion Post for sharing their information with me. From Almond; Chuck Fox, Guy Grantier and the Almond Historical Society. From Whitesville; Aaron Kuhn, Friendship; Mark Voorheis who was a great help.
I want to THANK Barbara Bernstein for the use of the books; “Index to War of 1812 Pension Files.” These books contained thousands and thousands of soldier’s names. And to Mary Rhode’s for sharing her list of veteran’s that she had compiled over the years.
With out these wonderful people, I wouldn’t have most of the information that I have acquired. I started out with just the names that I had of the Andover veterans. I have added two names to that list that I didn’t have. I have ended up with 221 men associated with Allegany Co. N.Y. One gentleman also used another name along with his own.
I know that there are names missing as the ones that didn’t apply of a pension or claim aren’t listed. Nothing was ever written in our county history. Who thought that anyone would ever care?
Another thing to take into consideration is that some of these men were buried in cemeteries that don’t exist anymore. Some never had a headstone as they were very costly and money wasn’t in big supply and it was used for something more important.
