BOLIVAR, NY - Samuel W. Griswold, 95, formerly of 6661 Phillips Hill Road, passed away Thursday (April 22, 2010) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center after a long illness.

     Born June 11, 1914, in the town of Wirt, he was a son of Willard and Daisy Chadwick Griswold. On June 14, 1933, in Olean, he married the former Irma E. Hinds, who survives.

     Sam served as a highway superintendent for the Town of Bolivar for 42 years before retiring.

     He enjoyed old steam engines, farming, gardening, his animals and working on his oil lease.

     Surviving, in addition to his wife, are 10 children, Duane (Paulett) Griswold of Bolivar, Phillip (Betty) Griswold of Gifford, IL, Arvilla (Emery) Gallup of Smethport, PA, Shirley (Ralph) Osgood of Caledonia, NY, Mildred Parsons of Ocala, FL, Charles (Pauline) Griswold of Oakfield, Georgia (Charles) Clairmont of Ocala, FL, Alice (Terry) Haxton of Bolivar, Isaac Griswold of Bolivar and David (Robyn) Griswold of Bolivar; 40 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; two half-sisters, Shirley Henderson and Loraine Chapman, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

     He was predeceased by two sons, Timothy Griswold and Samuel Griswold; four brothers, Marvin Griswold, Francis Griswold, Calvin Griswold and Guy Eugene Griswold; two sisters, Lucille Griswold and Dorothy Jane Edminston; two half-brothers, Warren Griswold and Walter Griswold; and two half-sisters, Neva Winston and Marie House.

     Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Schaffner Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (April 26, 2010) in the Knights Creek Evangelical Church with the Rev. Carl Kemp, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery.
