Harry E. Ward Dies; Operated Store Here Prior to Retirement
Harry E. Ward, 75, Owner and operator of Ward’s Jewelry Store here for many years died yesterday at Jones Memorial Hospital.
A resident of 98 Stevens St. He was a lifelong resident of this community, where he was born May 14, 1885. His parents were Fred W. and Mame Tallman Ward. He was married in 1906 to Katherine “Kate” Shields who died Feb.4, 1959.
In 1900 Mr. Ward became associated with the store, which had been founded in 1881 by his father. After his father’s death he continued its operation until May 1, 1957, when he sold the business to Ralph H. Dewey of Wellsboro, PA.
He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church here. He also was a member of Buffalo Consistory and Shriners and the Wellsville Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and the Elks and Moose organizations here.
Mr. Ward is survived by several nieces and nephews. A brother Herbert, died several years ago.
Friends may call 2 to 5 and 7 to 9p.m. at Embser Funeral Home, where funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday by Rev. Thomas Murray. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.
